Ingredients

For the Base
  • 1 tbsp Olive Oil Adds richness and moisture; substitute with avocado oil if preferred.
  • 1 tbsp Garlic, minced Provides aromatic flavor; fresh minced is best, but garlic powder can be used as a substitute.
  • 1 lb Ground Turkey Main protein source, lean and healthy; ground chicken or beef can be used as alternatives.
  • ½ tsp Salt Enhances overall flavor; adjust to taste preference.
  • ¼ tsp Black Pepper Adds a hint of spice; use fresh cracked for best taste.
For the Vegetables
  • 1 cup Onion, diced Provides sweetness and texture; substitute with shallots for a milder flavor.
  • Yellow Bell Pepper Adds sweetness and color; any bell pepper works, or use zucchini for a different twist.
  • 3 cups Sweet Potatoes, diced The star of the dish, providing natural sweetness; can be substituted with butternut squash.
For the Seasoning
  • 1.5 tbsp Ground Cumin Adds warmth and depth; this spice can be swapped with taco seasoning for a different flavor profile.
  • 1 tsp Chili Powder Brings mild heat and flavor; adjust based on spice tolerance or skip for a milder dish.
For the Finish
  • ½ cup Water Assists in cooking the sweet potatoes; can use low-sodium chicken or vegetable broth for added flavor.
  • ½ cup Mozzarella, shredded Adds creaminess and a savory finish; substitute with dairy-free cheese for a plant-based version.
  • ¼ cup Cilantro, chopped Fresh herb for garnish, adding brightness; omit if not preferred or use parsley as a substitute.

Equipment

  • Large cast iron skillet

Method

Step‑by‑Step Instructions
  1. Begin by heating a large cast iron skillet over medium-high heat. Once hot, add 1 tablespoon of olive oil along with 1 tablespoon of minced garlic. Sauté for about 1 minute until the garlic is fragrant and lightly golden.
  2. Next, add 1 pound of ground turkey to the skillet. Use a wooden spoon to break it apart as it cooks. Sauté for approximately 8 minutes, or until the turkey is evenly browned and no longer pink.
  3. Once the turkey is browned, sprinkle in 1.5 tablespoons of ground cumin, 1 teaspoon of chili powder, ½ teaspoon of salt, and ¼ teaspoon of black pepper. Stir well to ensure the spices evenly coat the turkey.
  4. After seasoning, mix in 1 cup of diced onion and the yellow bell pepper. Sauté the mixture for 3–4 minutes until the vegetables have softened.
  5. Now, fold in 3 cups of diced sweet potatoes along with ½ cup of water. Cover the skillet with a lid and allow it to cook for 6–8 minutes.
  6. Remove the lid and adjust the seasoning with additional salt and pepper if desired. Top the mixture with ½ cup of shredded mozzarella cheese, allowing it to melt.
  7. Finally, remove the skillet from heat and sprinkle with ¼ cup of chopped cilantro for a fresh touch.
