Preparing the Cake
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and line two 9-inch round springform pans with parchment paper.
- In a large bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, baking powder, salt, and spices.
- In another bowl, mix brown sugar, oil, buttermilk, applesauce, molasses, eggs, and vanilla until smooth.
- Gradually add the dry mixture to the wet mixture, folding gently.
- Divide the batter between the prepared pans and bake for 22-26 minutes.
- Allow cakes to cool in the pans for 5 minutes before transferring to wire racks.
Making the Frosting
- Beat cream cheese and butter until creamy. Gradually add sugar, vanilla, and salt, mixing until fluffy.
Assembling the Cake
- Frost the top of one cooled cake layer, place the second layer on top, and frost the entire cake.
- Add optional toppings as desired.
