Ingredients

For the Squid
  • 1 whole medium-sized squid (14-16 oz) Use fresh squid for the best flavor and texture.
For the Sauce
  • 2 tbsp red chili pepper flakes (Gochugaru) Adjust quantity for desired spice level.
  • 0.75 tsp black pepper
  • 0.75 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp fish sauce Can substitute with a vegan alternative if desired.
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 0.5 tsp soy sauce Use tamari for a gluten-free version.
  • 1 tsp sesame oil
  • 0.5 tsp sesame seeds
For the Garnish
  • 4 stems green onions, cut into 1” pieces
  • 1 tbsp avocado oil Excellent for high-heat cooking during stir-frying.

Equipment

  • skillet or wok

Method

Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. Begin by preparing your star ingredient, the squid. Carefully cut the squid in half lengthwise and remove any cartilage, ensuring the flesh is clean. Rinse the squid pieces thoroughly under cold water until it feels smooth and free of grit, then pat them dry with paper towels to enhance the searing later on.
  2. Next, take your cleaned squid and slice it into ½ inch wide pieces. This uniformity will ensure even cooking and tenderness in your Korean Spicy Stir-Fried Squid Delight.
  3. In a separate bowl, combine the minced garlic, gochugaru, black pepper, and salt. Next, add the fish sauce, soy sauce, sesame oil, and sesame seeds, stirring the mixture well until all the ingredients meld together beautifully.
  4. Now, focus on your fresh garnish. Chop the green onions into 1-inch pieces and set them aside.
  5. Get your cooking equipment ready by heating a skillet or wok over high heat. Add 1 tablespoon of avocado oil and allow it to shimmer slightly.
  6. Once the oil is hot, add the sliced squid to the pan in a single layer. Stir-fry for about 1 minute, tossing continuously until the squid becomes opaque and slightly curled.
  7. Pour in the prepared sauce mixture over the cooked squid and stir-fry for another minute, allowing the squid to get well-coated.
  8. Finally, toss in the chopped green onions and quickly combine them into the stir-fry. This should take about 30 seconds.
  9. Plate your delicious creation immediately, serving the Korean Spicy Stir-Fried Squid Delight on its own or alongside a steaming mound of rice.
