Preparation Steps
- Prepare the slaw by mixing your slaw ingredients in a bowl, cover, and refrigerate for at least one hour.
- Butter one side of each slice of rye bread with softened salted butter.
- Heat a large frying pan over medium-high heat, then melt a small pat of butter.
- Cook the deli pastrami in the hot pan for about 1 minute on each side until warmed through.
- Spread a generous layer of Russian dressing on the unbuttered sides of the rye bread.
- Assemble the sandwich by layering the warm pastrami, slaw, dill pickles, and Swiss cheese.
- Top with the second slice of bread, buttered side facing out, and press down gently.
- Cook the sandwich in the pan over medium-low heat for about 4–5 minutes on each side.
- Remove from the pan, let cool for a minute, then slice in half and serve.
