Ingredients

For the Bread
  • 1 loaf Italian Bread A large loaf provides stability and a delicious, crispy exterior.
For the Filling
  • 1 pound Ground Beef This main protein can be swapped for ground turkey or sausage for variation.
  • 24 oz Marinara Sauce Enhances flavor and adds moisture; go for your favorite brand or homemade.
  • 15 oz Ricotta Cheese Offers a creamy richness; cottage cheese or vegan ricotta are great alternatives.
  • 0.5 cup Parmesan Cheese Adds depth and tang; Grana Padano works as a similar substitute.
  • 0.25 cup Fresh Parsley Gives freshness and color; basil or spinach makes a lovely replacement.
  • 1 Egg Binds the filling for consistency; consider a flax egg for a vegan option.
  • 1 tsp Garlic Powder Provides a concentrated garlic flavor without the moisture; fresh minced garlic is a delicious alternative.
  • 0.5 tsp Dried Oregano Imparts an herbaceous kick; if you have fresh, use 1 tsp instead.
  • 8 oz Mozzarella Cheese Melts beautifully for that gooey texture; mixing in provolone adds variety.
For the Topping
  • 0.5 cup Butter Adds richness while creating a flavorful top layer; try flavored butter for an extra zing.
  • 2 cloves Garlic Brings forth a fresh, aromatic flavor; roasted garlic provides a milder alternative.

Method

Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a large skillet over medium heat, brown 1 pound of ground beef until fully cooked, about 7-10 minutes.
  3. Stir in 24 ounces of marinara sauce, 1 teaspoon of garlic powder, and ½ teaspoon of dried oregano into the skillet.
  4. In a mixing bowl, combine 15 ounces of ricotta cheese, ½ cup of grated Parmesan cheese, ¼ cup of chopped fresh parsley, and 1 beaten egg.
  5. Take a large loaf of Italian bread and cut it lengthwise in half. Hollow out the insides, leaving about ½ inch of bread around the edges.
  6. Layer your fillings by spreading half of the ricotta mixture, followed by half of the ground beef mixture and half of the mozzarella cheese.
  7. Place the top half of the bread over your layered fillings, sealing it like a sandwich.
  8. In a small bowl, combine ½ cup of melted butter with 2 minced garlic cloves and brush this mixture generously over the top of the loaf.
  9. Wrap the entire loaf in aluminum foil and bake for 20 minutes.
  10. Uncover the foil and continue baking for an additional 10-15 minutes.
  11. Once baked, let it cool for a few minutes on a cutting board, slice, and serve warm.
