Method

Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine 2 cups of all-purpose flour, 1 teaspoon of baking powder, and ½ teaspoon of salt. Gradually pour in ¾ cup of warmed whole milk and 2 tablespoons of melted butter, mixing with a fork until a shaggy dough forms. Let it rest for 10 minutes.
  2. Transfer the rested dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead for about 1 minute, until it's smooth and elastic. Dust with flour as needed.
  3. Divide the kneaded dough into 8 equal pieces and roll each piece into a ball. Flatten each ball into a 6-inch circle.
  4. Heat about 2 inches of canola oil in a deep pot over medium heat until it reaches 350°F (180°C). Carefully fry each dough circle one at a time for 2-3 minutes, or until golden brown.
  5. Remove the fried chalupa shell from the oil, allowing excess oil to drip off. Transfer to a plate lined with paper towels.
  6. Spoon your preferred taco meat into each chalupa shell, fill generously, and top with shredded lettuce, diced tomatoes, and shredded cheese. Add sour cream, avocado, or jalapeños as desired!
