Step-by-Step Instructions
- In a large mixing bowl, combine 2 cups of all-purpose flour, 1 teaspoon of baking powder, and ½ teaspoon of salt. Gradually pour in ¾ cup of warmed whole milk and 2 tablespoons of melted butter, mixing with a fork until a shaggy dough forms. Let it rest for 10 minutes.
- Transfer the rested dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead for about 1 minute, until it's smooth and elastic. Dust with flour as needed.
- Divide the kneaded dough into 8 equal pieces and roll each piece into a ball. Flatten each ball into a 6-inch circle.
- Heat about 2 inches of canola oil in a deep pot over medium heat until it reaches 350°F (180°C). Carefully fry each dough circle one at a time for 2-3 minutes, or until golden brown.
- Remove the fried chalupa shell from the oil, allowing excess oil to drip off. Transfer to a plate lined with paper towels.
- Spoon your preferred taco meat into each chalupa shell, fill generously, and top with shredded lettuce, diced tomatoes, and shredded cheese. Add sour cream, avocado, or jalapeños as desired!
