Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. Preheat your oven to 400ºF (200ºC).
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the lean ground beef, finely chopped white onion, minced garlic, brown sugar, and Worcestershire sauce. Mix thoroughly.
  3. Season the meat mixture with kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper. Fold in Italian breadcrumbs and the large egg.
  4. Transfer the prepared beef mixture into an 8-inch square baking dish, spreading it evenly.
  5. Spread the cold garlic mashed potatoes evenly over the beef layer.
  6. Sprinkle grated sharp cheddar cheese over the mashed potatoes, followed by the cooked and crumbled bacon.
  7. Cover the casserole loosely with aluminum foil and bake for 30 minutes.
  8. Remove the foil and continue to bake for an additional 10–15 minutes, until the cheese is melted and lightly golden.
