- Preheat your oven to 400ºF (200ºC).
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the lean ground beef, finely chopped white onion, minced garlic, brown sugar, and Worcestershire sauce. Mix thoroughly.
- Season the meat mixture with kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper. Fold in Italian breadcrumbs and the large egg.
- Transfer the prepared beef mixture into an 8-inch square baking dish, spreading it evenly.
- Spread the cold garlic mashed potatoes evenly over the beef layer.
- Sprinkle grated sharp cheddar cheese over the mashed potatoes, followed by the cooked and crumbled bacon.
- Cover the casserole loosely with aluminum foil and bake for 30 minutes.
- Remove the foil and continue to bake for an additional 10–15 minutes, until the cheese is melted and lightly golden.
