Ingredients
To create your masterpiece, gather the following ingredients:
Pizza Dough:
- 2 ¼ teaspoons (1 packet) active dry yeast
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 1 cup warm water (about 110°F/43°C)
- 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 teaspoon salt
Pizza Sauce:
- 1 can (14 ounces) crushed tomatoes
- 1 clove garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- ½ teaspoon dried basil
- Salt and pepper to taste
Pizza Toppings:
- Shredded mozzarella cheese
- Your choice of additional toppings such as pepperoni, mushrooms, bell peppers, onions, olives, or fresh basil leaves
Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Pizza Dough
In a small bowl, combine the active dry yeast, sugar, and warm water. Stir gently and let it sit for about 5 minutes until the mixture becomes foamy. This indicates that the yeast is active.
In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour and salt. Make a well in the center and pour in the yeast mixture and olive oil. Stir with a wooden spoon or spatula until the dough comes together.
Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface and knead for about 5-7 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic. Shape the dough into a ball.
Step 2: Let the Dough Rise
Clean the mixing bowl and coat it with a thin layer of olive oil. Place the dough ball in the bowl and turn it to coat it with oil. Cover the bowl with a clean kitchen towel or plastic wrap and let the dough rise in a warm, draft-free area for about 1-2 hours or until it has doubled in size.
Step 3: Prepare the Pizza Sauce
In a small saucepan, combine the crushed tomatoes, minced garlic, dried oregano, dried basil, salt, and pepper. Simmer the sauce over low heat for about 15-20 minutes to allow the flavors to meld together. Remove from heat and let it cool.
Step 4: Shape the Pizza Dough
Preheat your oven to 475°F (245°C). If you have a pizza stone, place it in the oven while it preheats.
Punch down the risen dough to release the air. Transfer it to a lightly floured surface and divide it into two equal portions if you prefer smaller pizzas or use the entire dough for a larger pizza. Cover the dough portions with a clean kitchen towel and let them rest for about 10 minutes.
Take one portion of the dough and, using a rolling pin, roll it out into your desired pizza shape and thickness. If you prefer a thin crust, roll it out thinner, or leave it slightly thicker for a more substantial crust.
Step 5: Assemble Your Pizza
Transfer the rolled-out dough to a baking sheet or a pizza peel dusted with cornmeal or flour to prevent sticking. If you’re using a pizza stone, carefully transfer the dough onto a pizza peel or an inverted baking sheet dusted with cornmeal or flour.
Spread a generous amount of the prepared pizza sauce evenly over the dough, leaving a small border around the edges. Sprinkle shredded mozzarella cheese over the sauce and add your favorite toppings. Be creative and experiment with different combinations!
Step 6: Bake Your Homemade Pizza
If you’re using a baking sheet, place it in the preheated oven. If you’re using a pizza stone, slide the pizza from the peel or baking sheet onto the hot stone in the oven.
Bake the pizza for about 12-15 minutes or until the crust is golden brown and the cheese is bubbling and slightly browned. Keep an eye on it to prevent burning.
Step 7: Let it Cool and Slice
Once the pizza is done, remove it from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes. This allows the cheese and sauce to set slightly, making it easier to slice. Use a pizza cutter or a sharp knife to slice the pizza into wedges or squares.
